There is Only One True God

Bible stories for children

Once upon a time, there was a family of birds that lived in a tree by the park. There was a Dada, a Mama Bird, and the little birds: Duff, Puff, Gruff, Ruff & Tuff, and Fluff.

The little birds were playing at the park with Squeeker and Roscoe when Sammy the Snake arrived. He wanted to have races to see who was the fastest animal at the park. Everyone agreed and decided to start by the swings and race to the sandbox. They all lined up, and when everyone was ready, Sammy yelled out, “Ready, set, go!”

They all ran as fast as they could but it was Sammy who reached the sandbox first. When he realized he won, he shouted, “I am the best! I am the best! I am the fastest animal ever!”

Sammy was being prideful and the other animals didn’t like it one bit. Duff told Sammy that it isn’t nice to boast and that God says pride is a sin. But Sammy didn’t care. He kept talking about how great he was and even told the other animals that they should call him “Sire, Sammy, the Best.”

When the little birds, Squeeker, and Roscoe refused to call him “Sire, Sammy, the Best” Sammy became angry. Then he came up with a plan to get back at the other animals.

First, he went to Roscoe while he was picking blueberries, and said, “Hi Roscoe, do you want to hear about the dream I had last night? God spoke to me and told me all about what he wants from us.”

“Sure,” replied Roscoe, “I need to know what God says.”

“Well,” said Sammy, “He told me that his name is Chocolate-god, and that if we worship him he will give us free candy.”

“Wow, that’s great!” Roscoe exclaimed.

“Yes,” Sammy continued, “all you have to do is pray to him and worship. Then he will give you all the candy you want.”

“I can do that!” Roscoe said with excitement. Then he prayed, “Dear Chocolate-god, I worship you. Please give me some free chocolate. Amen.”

Sammy smiled and told Roscoe that he did a great job. Then he slithered away laughing quietly to himself. “What a silly raccoon,” he whispered.

Now when Roscoe wasn’t looking, Sammy hid two cholate candy bars in the bush where Roscoe lived. Later, when Roscoe found them he cried, “Wow! Thank you Chocolate-god! I will worship you.”

Next Sammy visited Squeeker and said, “Hi Squeeker, do you want to hear about the dream I had last night? God spoke to me and told me all about what he wants from us.”

Well, Squeeker was definitely interested in hearing from God, so Sammy continued. “He said that his name is the Nut-god and that if we worship him he will give us all the free nuts that we want. Do you like nuts, Squeeker?”

“I do”, said Squeeker, “What do I have to do to get those nuts?”

“All you need to do is worship the Nut-god and pray to him,” Sammy replied.

So Squeeker got down on his knees and prayed to the Nut-god. “Oh great Nut-god, I worship you. Please give me some free nuts. Amen.”

Once again Sammy smiled and slithered away laughing to himself. Then Sammy went through the woods and found many of the nuts that Squeeker had stored up for the winter. He secretly brought them to Squeeker’s home and unloaded them on his bed. Later that day when Squeeker found the pile of nuts he exclaimed, “Oh wow, thank you, Nut-god. I believe in you.”

The next day all the animals were playing at the park. After enjoying several rounds of fly-tag Roscoe got hungry.

“Why don’t you pray for some food?” suggested Sammy.

“Great idea,” said Roscoe. “Dear Chocolate-god, I am hungry. Please give me some yummy chocolate candy to eat. Thank you.”

But Squeeker objected, saying, “There’s no such thing as a Chocolate-god. The real God is the Nut-god.” Then he prayed, “Dear Nut-god, you are the true god, can you please provide some nuts for all of us to eat? Thank you.”

But Duff couldn’t let his friends believe in such silly false gods. So he said, “Roscoe, Squeeker, what are you two doing? The only true God is Jesus. He is the only One we should pray to.”

Roscoe shot back, “No, I prayed to the Chocolate-god yesterday and he gave me free candy. He is real.”

Then Squeeker shouted, “I don’t believe that. The Nut-god left a pile of nuts on my bed yesterday. He is the real god.”

Well, the argument got so heated that they started throwing sticks at one another. Then Puff flew quickly to get Dada Bird. After listening to Roscoe and Squeeker tell their stories he came up with an idea. “How about we do a test? We will each pray to our different gods for him to provide food and protection in a way that is best for us. Roscoe, you pray for candy. Squeeker you can pray for those nuts. And we will pray to Jesus for food that is good for us. Then whichever god answers must be the real God.” Everyone liked the idea and got down on their knees to pray.

The next day the animals gathered at the park to see which god answered their prayers. Squeeker looked down on the ground for nuts that his Nut-god might have left for him. When he couldn’t find anything he thought that maybe he didn’t pray hard enough. He decided to pray again. This time he shouted, jumped, danced, and through nut shells in the air to get the Nut-god’s attention.

When Roscoe realized that the Chocolate-god did not leave him any candy he followed Squeeker’s example. He thought that perhaps if he rolled around on the ground and screeched then the Chocolate-god might listen to him. The little birds shook their heads in sadness. They simply prayed to Jesus with sincerity that He would provide food for them. As soon as they ended their prayer, thunder crashed in the distance…“Boom! Boom! Boom!” it sounded.

Dada Bird yelled out, “It looks like a storm is coming! Everyone get in your homes!” The little birds obeyed by flying to their nest as fast as they could. Squeeker and Roscoe also went in their homes to wait out the storm. When everyone was safe inside, great winds came through the park. The rain poured down soaking the entire forest. Lightning struck hitting trees everywhere. In fact, branches were broken off of many trees around the park. The little birds cuddled together in their nest safe in their father’s wings.

When the storm was over all the animals slowly crept out of their homes. They made their way to the park to see the damage that had been done. Roscoe noticed that every tree in the park had been damaged by the storm except the tree that held the little birds’ nest. Squeeker was amazed to see that the ground was covered by seeds from plants and flowers around the park.

Dada Bird asked if everyone was okay. They nodded their heads. Then he asked Squeeker if the Nut-god had answered his prayers for nuts.

“No,” he replied, “he did not.”

Dada continued, “And Roscoe, did the Chocolate-god provide any candy for you?”

“No, there is no candy,” said Roscoe.

Dada smiled once again and spoke, “Do you see what the one true God did here, my little friends? We prayed to Jesus for food that is good for us, and He sent a storm to shake the trees & plants so that all these seeds would fall to the ground. All we need to do now is to collect them. Every tree around the park was shaken so much that they were damaged, but not our tree. God protected us. Jesus answered our prayers. He is the only true God. He loves you and wants to provide for you too.”

Squeeker and Roscoe both smiled at the thought. The nodded and quietly bowed their heads. Then all the animals said a prayer of thanks for the food that the one true God provided and ate a feast of seeds together with peace in their hearts. The End.
